The episode starts not with a bang, but a whimper. We were left hanging with the possibility of Jeff & Co being called on the carpet for mishandling their breakout job into commercial work. Instead, the client just wanted a free therapy session. Handholding is a part of the biz and sometimes the line between client and friend does get blurred.
We see this again in a slightly different form. Jeff takes on a small, out of the way kitchen renovation, mostly because he likes the off-beat clients. Bob doesn’t seem to say much, but his wife Barb says plenty. Her penchant for hugging and handholding (literal as well as figurative) is more Jenni’s speed, and the uptight Jeff and Trace bond over the personal space invasion.
A visit to the lesbian renovation is rather dull, as is the visit to a far away McMansion expansion that seems so out of touch with the current economic situation and reactionary style shift, that one almost wonders if this was filmed more than a year ago. Both trips just seem like excuses to move along the personal drama, which is what the show is really about, oddly.
If last episode was all about Jeff fixating on Sarah as Jenni’s replacement, then this episode is all about Jeff fixating on Trace as his own replacement. Weird. Are Jeff and Jenni running away to Tahiti together sometime soon?
